Dopesick Nation Premieres Tonight On Viceland!

Tonight is the premiere of the show I spent my summer working on, Dopesick Nation. It airs starting tonight at 10 p.m. on Viceland, and we're pretty proud of it. The opioid crisis (and the homeless crisis, which we're addressing in our documentary 90291: VENICE UNZIPPED, so it's been a heavy summer) in this country is at epidemic proportions - pandemic, really - and our hope is that maybe once people see how bad it really is, it will compel us all to really DO something about it.

Our main characters, Frankie and Allie, search out addicts to try to help them get clean, and it's some of the saddest, darkest stuff I've ever seen or heard of. In fact, I've heard stories that I'll never repeat because I don't want to put them in someone else's head. I've cried nearly every day ... but I've also felt hope. And it all begins with empathy. Addiction is a disease, and these people deserve our compassion, not our judgement. We all need to look out for each other, these days more than ever. Check out our trailer:

It's also a very scary time to be an addict, because the drugs have changed. Dealers have begun cutting it with fentanyl (what killed Prince) and carfentanil (what kills elephants), and people are dying off of one hit. I've heard of two people in L.A. o.d.'ing (dead) so far from COKE laced with fentanyl. Consider this a P.S.A. for those of you who still think it's fun to snort coke (gross), even just once in a while ... you can't tell it's got fentanyl in it, and you might die from one sniff. That simple. Up to you. Better to just say no. For real.

Please tune in tonight and every Wednesday for the next ten weeks, as the more people who watch, the more people we can help with another season of T Group/Viceland's Dopesick Nation.

Thank you!

Dopesick Nation airs 10 p.m. Wednesdays on Viceland.

  2. Thank you for this show. I am not an addict but addiction has affected my life greatly. I've lost many friends to drugs and I have always struggled to understand addiction. This show is helping me.

    2. So sorry about Kelly, this epidemic is everywhere. I've been struggling for years.been clean for 2 after 2 overdoses. One really bad. I've got brain damage but I'm still here.
Good show and I'm in love with Allie. Can you say that these days or am I going to catch a sexual harassment case? 😂

  3. Absolutely brilliant just from what I've already watched and read about.THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!for finding a way to bring awareness to this DISEASE that is wiping out a generation.I thank God(everyday) I was lucky enough to get clean and it finally clicked and has worked now for 8yrs.Back when our group of friends started is was tar heroin(and maybe their was one that their addiction started from pain pills unlike today, and unlike today it wasn't being cut with lord only knows what. You didnt hear about heroin when we were using it was just known as the "old black man junkie drug that you had to shoot up"until we figured out no it wasn't you could snort it.Over the years to present my group of friends as became only a handful as so many have died or in prison and couple still out there sadly,I struggled with a 16 year off and on addiction I was what they called a "functioning addict"(which that saying was always comical to me)after so many tries to get clean I had it that I was destined to just die one day from the drug or when I worked up enough courage to actually take my own life.As my children(who are now both wonderful young men by the grace of God and love of my family)as they got older I couldn't keep lying and for some reason I went through a methadone program(again)and of course wasn't my idea to start but it finally clicked I've been methadone and heroin free 8yrs now and on my worst day sober is still a great day.Why it worked that time?I still cant answer but i know everyday i have im so very thankful. So really just wanted to say props to all involved for sharing and bringing such awareness especially with the treatment and insurance issues and giving hope to so many that have I'm sure lost it.This isn't a war on drugs, wars end.God bless..From Dev in the Lou

    3. YES! Thank you SO much for telling the truth about your story and how methadone was the way for you and the stepping stone for you to stop! Methadone saved my life as well as I can't stand the stigma around methadone and the clinics! It pisses me off because if society would take this shit seriously and end the methadone stigma, mad lives would be saved if the stigma would be erased. The methadone clinics work if you work them! Don't make friends (cuz NoONE IS YOUR FRIEND there or on the streets), keep your head down do your iop groups get your dose and get the f*ck out! Don't get stuck on it, don't use it as a crutch, and MOST IMPORTANTLY methadone IS NOT FOREVER!

    1. Yes, his face was from a burn accident that he kept scratching. His neck is from a car crash while on fentanyl, and glass embedded in his neck. He says he wears his scars like "rings on a pimp" - to remember.

    3. I’m concerned about Frankie. Desire to help others is enormous but being a chronic relapser with 78 days as of episode 5. He’s setting himself up for another relapse. He need to help Frankie before he can help others. As a recovered heroin addict of 20 years i know we can’t keep it unless we give it away but we can’t give away what we don’t have If Frankie jyst worjed on Frankie for 2 years with meetings, a Sponsor and the 12 Steos and sone training then he could really help peopke without endangering his own recovery and life

    4. Thanks for this show. Myself and my husband are addicts and i have been clean for 10yrs and him for 2yrs. People are blind to this whole other world out here of addicts. I wondered about Frankie's scars and see his pain. Allie and Him are amazing. I taught class at a rehab for yrs after getting clean and stopped when my career took off. This show has spoken to my heart about going and speaking at jails and rehabs again. Thanks for caring. The world needs to see that a few blocks away from paradise......is hell

    5. Frankie deserves all the good things, man! He’s empathetic & generous, for sure. Because of having ~75 days, I feel concern that his wellbeing & sobriety are at risk because how much he gives of himself. The world is a better place because he’s in it. He deserves - & we want - him to be around & healthy for a long time!

    6. I worry for any recovering addict helping the way these two do. Allie just lost a dear friend and frankie who has his own deamins. I have almost two yrs and i hit my knees many times a day. I was just hired as a recovery assistant and i pray i can make a difference. Califorina has a similar story to Florida. Private insurance no problem. When that runs out your on your own. Im grateful for Frankie and Allie's all over hoping to just make a difference. Lots of love to you!##

    10. I agree it's very obvious Frank has been high in several episodes. Hopefully he gets the help he needs, I don't know personally if I could work so closely to addicts actively using being an addict myself. However it's amazing what they're doing for other addicts.

  6. Tonight's episode was truly sad because Kelly lost her life due to overdosing. That truly broke my heart, addiction is very hard to overcome. It's not impossible to overcome it but it's definitely very hard. My heart goes out to Allie and Kelly's family. So sad

    2. Omg Kelly passed? Is that why her story cut off so abruptly? That’s so sad. Did she OD? As an addict in active recovery it’s hurts my heart to hear about those who really did want to get clean but weren’t able too.

  7. So I know addiction way too well so how do you come off the suboxone now..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Kinda like the paradox of getting hooked on methadone in an effort to get off morphine & heroine such is the problem with Suboxone. Ok, so you don't get "high" on it but the addiction to it is complex. It took me longer to get off the Suboxone than any opioid I ever came off of. Try making a 2 - 3 month plan to ween yourself off of it. Good luck and may God's blessings be with you.

    2. Just my opinion as a recovered heroin addict and a treatment prof. Treating heroin addiction with nethadon is like treating alcoholism with alcohol
      Just my opinion

      Delete
    3. In my experience methadone and suboxone are best used for detox purposes only. If you stay on it longer you’ll have to go through withdrawals. Heroin withdrawals kast 4 days. Nethadone withdrawals can kast for months. Naltraxone is safe to take ling term. It’s a opiate blocker and unlike suboxone it has no narcotics in it So when you stop there aren’t any withdrawals. And while taking it you can’t get high from heroin or other oainkillers. It’s a goid way to get some clean time under your belt

      Delete
    4. For me subs were great if you're on the street and need to get your impulse to use lessoned to a degree that is psychologically "controllable"and help ease discomfort of withdrawal. MY problem was that the old pill mill docs are now pushing subs HARD. I was on them for 8 months, 16 mgs per day, and some days would only take half. When i decided to put the subs down the withdrawal was 100% worse than pills and H. But there's literally nothing they can give to wean you from subs. As a matter of fact, i called my Dr, told him i couldn't get off the couch and he aent a prescription for 60 MORE subs when id been clean then about 8 days. He didn't even see me. Sent the prescription home with my father when he was in for a routine physical. Just saying, be careful, in 10 years we will be looking at a suboxone epidemic. Just my opinion. I'm trying too. Be strong. Stick your chest out and say "I'm not gonna let this substance steal my life and my legacy". Power thru. Sweat it out, get it out. You can do it! Fuck Opiates!!!

      Delete
    5. How about taking NOTHING ? Clean. Not dependent on any substance. That’s what freedom from active addiction is all about. Thepris that people think they need to be on something. 12 Step Programs have been working since 1940. Try it. It works. I’ve got 20 years that proves it works. The miracle happened. The desire to use wS lifted through a Spiritual Awakening

      Delete
    6. Suboxone is a bitch, the withdrawal is worse than any pain pill withdraw. I'd rather come off Vicodin 20xs then try and get off subs once. Suboxone wld be great if it was used for detox purposes ONLY. Being on it 1 month to 8yrs is insanity bc then u r dependant on the suboxone. The Drs don't want u off of it either. They say its better then being on the streets trying to score (which is true) but the Drs don't care, they care about that 200$ cash they get from EVERY patient ea month. If they truly cared they'd take ins to see the sun doc. It's a vicious cycle, it's sad and angering all at the same time. I love this show bc it's spot on and really sheds a light on the epidemic in this country. I graduated w 300 kids in HS, about 100 of them are dead now :(

    7. I used subs for detox only. My boyfriend and I had a clear two month plan to wean off and wrote down exactly how much we could take. Even after that last minute bit when we were supposed to be done it was still a couple nights of sweats etc but nothing we couldn't handle. Look, detox hurts but you gotta use subs for detox only. Otherwise what's the point?subs saved my life. Been clean 3 years. Good luck guys. Life is awesome now.

    9. @ neil guttenberg...your opinion is exactly why so many people stay away from 12 step programs...some people need more than that...and the attitude in the rooms of peoples recovery being less than because the choose MAT is keeping people from using 12 step programs.

    10. If you've been using a long time suboxone works great to fix your brain chemistry also you don't risk the chance of relapsing and overdosing. Being properly tapered off suboxone works to make withdrawals less. Everyone has a different story and a different path there's no right way to do it in my opinion it's what works for you.

Cold turkey and get right with the wrongs. All the co dependacy is cupcake bullshit . Picking up dope at the core is a result of lack of self. love . Once physically clean one needs to face self. 5. Frankie while extremely passionate about helping other is still living the drama of an active addict. With 78 days clean and being a chronic relapser he’s settling himself up for another relapse. He can’t recover by just helping others. He’s not ready to be doing what he’s doing and his extreme stress shows it. I’m concerned because Frankie and Allie seem to be over invested emotionally. They are very well intentioned but they’re getting their fix through others dramas. I’m a recovered heroin addict of 20 years and a former Addiction Councillor. Frankie is setting himself up for another relapse. He should be working his recovery program for at leadt 2 years, attending daily meetings, working the 12 steps with his sponsor before he gies out to save the workd. He kacks a solud foundation, lack time clean and lacks the training necessary to work with others. By spending all his time trying to save other he’s taking the focus off of himself. People do this knowingky or unknowingly so that they don’t have to work on thenselves. That’s my concern for Frankie and Allie, especially Frankie. They are both over invested. That’s easy to see
      Thank you
      Neil

    6. I could tell Frankie wasn’t doing well. I thought he was either using or about to use. Frankie has a lot to offer. He relates to addicts really well but Frankie needs to take care of Frankie before he is able to do this type of work. Frankie please keep the focus on yourself and your recovery
You can’t keep repeating the same behavior expecting different resilts. God bless you

    9. I watch the show. It’s very compelling. I mostly watch Frankie, with sadness because Frankie has a death wish he should be doing 3 things
      1 making meetings
      2 hanging around recovering people
3 working on the Steps with his sponsor

I see everyone here who thinks he’s courageous. I see a very sick addict with no recovery who has a death wish. Addiction is no joke and doing what he’s doing isn’t for anetures. People here make fun of the show Intervention. I do interventions. Those interventions on TV on done by professionals. Not by people with 78 days clean who constantly relapse behind it.

Neil: can you please stop preaching and sounding off with negativity? This is an extremely positive and encouraging feed that has given people a place to honor their recovery and addiction battles as well as compliment a show with an amazing purpose. We have hwars your story, your 20 years and professional experience. We do not need to reeead it with every post.
Also, please put your education to use and utilize spellcheck. The typos truly do distract from your points, good and bad.

    11. I currently live in boca. Moved here from the north east like so, so many. I didn’t directly moved here for rehab or recovery although god knows I qualify. Since as long as I can remember addiction has been part of my life. Like almost every one it always starts with a script. Either yours or a family members or friends. For me, it was my mom who I saw struggle. By the time i was old enough to see it, I started taking them too. Be willing to bet 95% or more opiate addicts start with a doctors script. Perks, Roxie’s, OxyContin, Xanax. Jesus Christ these doctors are pumping that shit out like candy and it’s sad. Got caught up right before my 20th birthday, hooked. Couldn’t go with out pills. Before I turned 21 my mom wasn’t so lucky and passed. I’m almost 30 now and not one day hasn’t been a struggle. Non stop in and out of rehabs and medical detoxes, that is when I was lucky enough not to be taking current vacations to my local county jails for weeks or months. This thing has effected so many people I love it’s beyond belief. Lost more friends along the way then I wanna try be saddened to recall. All good, young, bright people. People with good hearts that this thing, this monster has taken way to early. I live in an area so close to this all down here in south east Florida that I watch this show and recognize many, many people. Been living here for two years now, I’m not perfect, well use the term my life is still “manageable” haven’t used opiates in over two years now. My last and final time I stopped, 2 days sub detox, no insurance. It’s a caring industry, to those lucky enough to have medical insurance. If not, ya get a few days. So back out on the streets physically crumbling. Homeless, hopeless. But I had two days, blessed enough for a friends mom to take me in and give me a chance. I kicked from there cold turkey off a nice cocktail mixture of ...... heroine, I’d cut it with Xanax and coke, cause that was smart right. The. I’d smoke pills of foil cause I was that sick. Blow some more coke, do more dope, then eat more bars. Well cold turkey off all that, all it took was want. I laid on a floor for 25 days crawling. I was well say the guy who knew guys. So I had to block just about everyone but 4 people from calling me. It was painful as all hell but I did it. Three months later with a lot or grit and grind I moved my self to Florida for a friend I loved to be there for them in their recovery. We won’t get into that story. Saying all this cause this show is so real and so raw. This is really what it is. Frankie, brother if ur struggling, take a min for your self and you call your people for love and support. Seen this show and can’t help but reach out in some way and show Allie and Frankie love and admiration. Your two warriors, brave and courageous. Don’t stop fighting. Haven’t been lucky enough to cross your paths yet though we live in the same 10 mile radius. But I saw either of you, much love and respect for you both. Your both doing a very admirable thing. Don’t give that up no matter what anyone says or what ever gets in your way.

  19. Frankie should spend more time on his recovery than he spends trying to help others. Ge is a chronic relapser with 72 days clean. He’s still living the drama of an active drug addict. He’s crossing the line by trying to recover by heloing others. And i think it’s his makor relapse issue. Spending more time working on other than yourself just takes the focus off of himself and his own recovery. You can’t make people ready. You can’t maje people want to be sober. I’m a recovered addict of 20 years and a former Addiction Councillor. Frank needs to work his own problem of recovery for at least 2 years.before trying to do what he’s doing. You can’t give away what you don’t have. I like his commitment to helping others but I’ve seen too many addicts in very early recovery relapse because they don’t have the time, the foundation and the training to go out and save the world. I’m saying this because i see him and Allie become over invested emotionally in helping people. Lastly. Millions need recovery but very few want recovery and are willing to do what it takes. Thank you Neil G

    1. Frankie is using even when he’s not on a drug. He’s addicted to the life style. The drama and the chaos of ither addicts. As of episode 4 or 5 he said he had 78 days clean and has relapsed many times doing what he’s doing He’s not capable or qualified, he has no business doing what he’s doing at this point. It’s the reason why he keeps relapsing. I had to save myself before i could save anyone else. 2 years minimum of daily meetings, working the 12 Steps with my Sponsor and then i was trained to work with others. I’m afraid Frankie is playing Russian roulette. At 78 days clean he shouldn’t be spending all of his time around sick addicts.

They will get him high before he gets them clean.
Their disease is much more powerful than his 78 days clean. What he’s doing is not courageous. It’s insane. Trust me. His story proves it

    3. Jesus Christ Neil, shut the fuck up already. I have memorized your life story at this point. Go to a meeting. All that negativity could cause you a relapse. Take your own advice and take care of yourself, leave everyone else to take the path that works for them. No two people will ever have the exact same recovery story. Good luck, and good health for all of us. You only fail when you stop trying. So PLEASE, don't stop trying. Sending love and warm thoughts to every single person affected by this horrible disease. 💕✌

  22. I shake my head during each episode I watch. I was homeless, penniless, with no insurance, but DAF took me in and I graduated 60 days later back in 1993 and my how things have changed. On this show, I see a barely clean guy trying to give using addicts advice, a guy has no business doing that until he has at least 2 to 3 years clean. Then there's a young lady who keeps trying to make addicts be her friend as she lives with some guy who can't stay clean. I see a lot of coddling of people who need tough love more than anything else. What I don't see is any kind of a adult role model for addicts to look up to and spire to be like. I'm still a local to the area, and the one good point from the last episode is how it's turned into a money making industry for Delray Beach and the surrounding area... money making for the treatment centers, halfway houses, sober homes, and most importantly the City Of Delray Beach. Recovery in this region has become a joke... good luck out there!

    1. Exactly my point Anonymous. Frankie has no business doing what he’s doing. It’s sending the wrong message to addicts with very little clean time. It’s born out of codependency. He’s a chronic relapser because of what he’s doing. In his words “ I’m going to ride around and try to find that guy who is obviously not ready to get ckean so that at least I know whether he’s ok or not “. That statement is about Frankie not about the addict. Fact is you can’t recover by just trying to help others. Yes millions need help but as you can see from the TV Show very few addicts are ready and willing to do whatever it takes. I recovered from heroin addiction 20 years ago, one day at a time and spent a decade as a Certified Addiction Councillor. You don’t go around trying to save people with your 78 days clean unless you have a death wish. Eith you’ll relapse again and die or get a bullet in your head. THAT is real. That is the reality AND you never ever do it alone. By Frankie calling them HIS. Clients gies right to his ego. What are you all going to say when Frankie shows up dead ? It’s not heroic it’s stupidity. I don’t know Allie’s situation but she obviously has codependency issues as well. Being too emotionally invested in people who just aren’t ready to get clean
Reality is only 2% of heroin addicts actually get and stay clean. Ittsad but the reality Of Addiction, especially heroin addiction
Unless you want to die , you don’t go off half cocjed with 78 says clean and no recovery whatsoever and try to save people. They have no training to do so. Both would be better off working on their own program and recovering
That is hard enough in itself. They work with sick People during the say in a detox and go out at night trying to save the world.

It’s reckless, irresponsible and often datal
The addicts that they try to help will get them high before they get anyone clean

That’s just the truth. Look at Frankie. He’s very sick. It’s not heroic People. I don’t want to see Either of them die and become a martyr

    2. Dude, I've been reading your post. I believe you have good intentions but enough is enough. Every addict is different. Their recovery is different. I watch every week in awe of what really goes on and I don't want him to use either but that's totally up to him and all your doing is pushing and pushing. That can cause a relapse too. I've dealt with addiction in my family for over 30 yrs and I could only hope my family member would have 75 days sober. Thank you for your input and I'm so thankful for your sobriety for 20 yrs. That's a blessing!! Just give Frankie some encouragement. You've said your peace and I can tell you are a passionate person just dial it back man. Best wishes on your sobriety and helping others.

It was nice seeing life & happiness all over Chris! Allie & Frankie are both hero’s. I appreciate the brutal honesty this series puts out there. No candy coating. It’s literally life or death. I’m hoping they do a follow up with everyone they helped.

    1. I have heard people on gere ridicule. “ Intervention”. Why ? Those are trained professionals. Those are recovered addicts and alcoholics with decades of time and experience. Allie goung out there alone every night is subject to being beaten and raped aside from relapsing and dying

That’s the reality Folks. Trust me. It’s amateur hour and these 2 people may easily die from it

      Delete
    2. Lastly Allie calling the addicts in the street her “ Clients “ is egotistical and bizarre. Addiction Professionals working in the treatment field have Clients. Y’all have no idea of the world of addiction. You all think it’s cool what Frankie does. A chronic relapser with 78 days who is willing to help everyone but himself

    4. It's hardly Emmy worthy. These two people are doing pretty much what you're not supposed to do, enabled people and try to make them their friends. Recovery professionals keep some distance and don't bribe or coax addicts into treatment. They simply provide information about the programs and offer help to those who are truly ready to accept it on the program's terms. Very few addicts will survive, that's a fact most people in America still refuse to accept. Our country wants to candy coat everything and hold addicts hands now... that's just insane! Only the few addicts who've had enough pain and misery, who are willing to do "whatever they're told" by others with "years" of sobriety... only those people will make it. I sympathize tremendously, but that doesn't help in any way to keep other people off drugs. The coddling and enabling I see on this show only makes things worse. Only the willingness to do whatever it takes to not use worksand I don't see much of that coming from anyone featured on this show!

It's not just teenagers rummaging through their parents medicine cabinets anymore countless people are dying. There isn't enough help for people like us who struggle every single second of our lives. The people who have never experienced it just can't understand why we do the things we do and make the messed up decisions we make as addicts. I really hope that this show enlightens people and helps people to gain compassion for those they know who are struggling to get it right and stay sober. Because that's what we need is more compassion and less hate. People fear the unknown and maybe this is the chance to educate world so that people can get the help they so desperately need. Thank you for taking on this task as an addict who struggles constantly it gives me hope to see people helping others like myself

    1. I agree you could see he was high on and off on the different episodes he really shouldn't be on a show trying to get other addicts clean when it's obvious he's not clean himself who knows maybe it's part of the big picture and he's gonna get help for his self on the show not out to put Frankie down it's just been hipacritical to me seeing him high on the show

    2. I agree. Frankie is doing admirable work but let’s not effusively extol him if there are serious issues with his effectivenes to perform his job. I know nothing about his fiduciary obligations and liabilities but it seems ironic that his recovery is precarious and he is also responsible for helping others.
I love Neil GUTTENBERGs posts. He is critically analyzing the information presented to us by the show, and adding his own experience to explain his insight. Neil, you also posted incessantly and your spelling and grammar are mistakes are so ubiquitous it weakens anything you say because either you don’t care to review your writing or you are not a strong with written communication. No one is assasinating your character Neil, just trying to help you be self aware.
I want more criticism of Frankie, makes for more interesting dialogue.
I also can’t imagine having to work with addicts and would not be able to handle a job like Frankie or Ally’s without burning out quickly. I have lasted a long time in corporate law and now at hedge funds, but the burnouts are cyclical and I think working with drug addicts is much more difficult. Addicts are self destructive and irrational so it is difficult to find a solution to find the solution that is unique to them.

Neil, .you make a lot of sense and all but stop all the judging towards Frankie and bombarding the comments section. Again, I agree with alot you say. You have good points but if you know and live addiction. You should also consider that what works for one person may not work for anyone else .Frankie, may be doing exactly what is keeping him grounded for the present and he is taking it one day at a time. Regardless he has my respect and shouldn't be looked down on or looked at as incapable. Also, I want to say that Allie is absolutely amazing and is beautiful inside and out and I pray that she gets what she wants and needs for once because she deserves it. Shitty things happen to good people and Frankie and Allie are living proof that at the end of the day. All that matters is love. Love kills the demons... I wish I could meet Allie And Frankie one day because there are just REAL and i just want anybody reading this to remember that everyday is another opportunity to be happy and indulge in the fruits of life .Life is Soo sweet and we all can easily take it for granted. God Bless You All...

I might not ever be on this site again and honestly came here because I googled about frankies scar.. But I will watch this show again. I have 7 years clean myself. 28 years old, house, 3 daughters, wife, and run my own pizza shop... The guy isn't sticking a spike in his arm,and he isn't kicking your door in for stuff to sell, they aren't perfect but there making a show because they care and want to make people aware. Being an addict is versatile. even though it's a cookie cutter problem.

  34. Episode 6 was excellent. Showing the codependent nature of relationships in active addiction. Very well done. Codependent relationships in and out of recovery are actually very selfish in nature. People lose who they are and are eneshed in each other. The show did a great job tonight.

  40. Anyone who knows what an addict looks like, can recognize that Frankie has been struggling the whole season. There have been several times when the camera has panned to him and he looks ready to nod out. He often walks like he’s on an opiate. That stiff, hunched, slow movement.

It is a sad state of affairs. Some addicts with decades of sobriety can’t be around people who are high because it still triggers them. I worry about Frankie being in those situations. He clearly has a good heart. I hope he can get clean and stay that way, even if it means he has to leave the charity.

Allie and the CPR episode had me horrified for her. It’s so odd to me—them just randomly driving around talking to addicts on the streets—“checking on them”. Maybe she should stay at home and work on checking on her boyfriend’s sobriety.

Very interesting show, all said. I hope the best for Allie and Frankie.

  43. I find this show to be absolutely stunning. Having worked in the healthcare field for nearly 30 yrs, I have acutely treated many people with various addictions. Their bodies are like roadmaps of what has been done to them, as well as what they have done to themselves, and that’s just what can be seen on the outside. This show highlights the desperation of these lost souls. I have so much respect for Allie & Frankie. As someone who has experienced burnout myself, I worry for both of them. In my humble opinion, it matters most that they express sympathy, kindness, & sincerity to these unfortunate people, even at the risk of their own safety & sobriety. @Neil: congrats on your sobriety. I agree with the others who have commented on your posts, you have made your point. Perhaps if you approached your posts by stating what you feel Allie & Frankie have done well, rather than criticism, your tone would seem significantly less harsh. Regardless of how qualified you perceive they are, they are making a positive impact in South Florida & I admire them for it.

  48. I started with one bump of H, a few weeks later I withdrew 10k from my 401k to buy 120 grams. I had my own business and figured buying a bunch at one time would be a better deal, which it was. The only problem was eventually every junkie in 10 miles knew I had a stash. I landed up getting arrested in 2009, they only found part of it so I did 2 years in house arrest. Havent touched it since but I still get a script of morphine 60mg for my nerve damage pain. I still feel like I'm a slave to opiates because everything I plan ahead is based on a Rx refill or doc appointment. I wish I could stop taking them but neuropathy pain, for me, can only be controlled with morphine. I do get a little satisfaction by knowing my script isn't as heavy as it used to be and that a lot of others take more. Watching this show is a really big reality check, although I never shot up, I've been around those who did, have put a video on youtube under this name as well showing a friend after shooting up. The show may not show a path to recovery you agree with but it does show the truth in the struggle, thereby providing a thread of understanding and hope. Get off the dope Frankie, and wait until you have 3 to 4 years clean before trying to help other addicts... you couldn't put 90 days clean together over the past 6 or 7 years. Allie, you can't be everyone's friend and you can't save them all. I don't see many of the people they do try to help as being anywhere near their bottom or truly ready to do "whatever it takes", much less humble enough to listen to the harsh reality they're all trying to avoid... that "Life isn't fair"! If this is a series of what not to do... they have nailed it!

    1. Who are you to say what someone's rock bottom is? Everyone's bottom is different and everyone deserves a chance at recovery. I'm pretty sure being homeless and having multiple overdoses= rock bottom

      Delete
    2. One thing that does make me somewhat upset is seeing frankie driving around high with other addicts riding in the car with them under the assumption that he's clean. Hopefully he gets better soon then maybe he can go back to helping people

    3. Frankie might get better if he stops his insanity. He can’t avoid dealing with his shame and guilt by helping others.

    4. Unfortunately being homeless and iverdosing is not always a person’s botton. As you can see every week. And every bottom has a trap door
Frankie has yet to hit bottom. Now he’s hooked on Suboxone

It's not so much what you're saying that is irritating, but the repetition and frequency that is annoying as hell!

  64. Most of everything Neil has stated is correct. I've wondered how Frank can help others while looking high or about to relapse himself. But cold turkey is not the solution for everyone. For me cold turkey worked a few months and then I'd relapse. Finally after a few years of failed attempts, subutex helped me get off pills. I stayed on it for a little over a year, then weened down over 2 to 3 months. It really got me over the hump and now I'm clean going on 2 years from everything. I'm also 37 years old and believe age and wisdom has alot to do w stopping. Most of the kids on the show aren't near ready to stop, let alone treatment. I was like them at one point. Thinking I could manage my use. Thinking I had it under control. I've done 12 step programs and it's true some of the people can be extremely judgemental. But it's your life and your own story to write....at least dopesick nation is trying to open people's eyes to the reality of how bad things can get. Just reminds me of how blessed I am to be clean and not living that life...cheers

  65. One last thing
I worked with another Addiction Councillor who had 32 years clean who worked in the field for over 25 years but stopped taking care of his own recovery. One day he didn’t show up for work. Turns out he put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger. He’s been dead for 10 years. I take this disease very seriously and that’s why i fear for Frankie’s well being
    Thank you

    1. If you cared that much about Frankie's well being you'd do something about it in person... not here on the interweb. You know exactly where Frankie is and you can't be of any help barking about him on this website. So put up or shut up about it! As for your friend... well you're the bigshot expert here Neil, so you should know better than anyone else... shit happens! 26 years myself Neil... 26 years, and right here in Delray Beach. I've seen em all come and almost all of em go. Out of the hundreds who came in when I did... only two others are still around. Those are the odds Neil so get a grip.

    2. Neil. He probably could stand the fact that he had to listen to you every day, and know that no matter how much work he put in that there was someone out there like you going against everything the program stands for. Be selfless for once and realize your more likely to save someone's life by shutting the hell up. Not one recovery specialist works with your ethic.

  66. So in my experience the longer a person is engaged in Treatment and Structure the better their chances. Also i think 12 Step programs and their fellowships work better for more people than any other program. But the individual HAS to make a commitment to recovery. That recovery comes first second and third. They need to be willing to ride the rollercoaster of emotions and most importantly be willing to NOT PICK IP NO MATTER WHAT. There aren’t any good readons for relapsing. Only Excuses. You know that Mr Anonymous. Lastly. The unfortunate heartbraking reality if addiction, especially heroin laced with cofentanyl is that people die. Peopke are dying at staggering numbers. So you only have to get clean once. And staying clean us easier than getting clean. Oeople beed to give recovery a chance one time at 100% effort. You and I k ow that recovery works. It’s the hardest thing i have ever done but imy out and I’m reasonably happy most of the time

So if you feel like using.......... SO WHAT ? It doesn’t mean you have to

    Long term Treatment and Structure

  67. Wow I just watched the last episode of the season tonight and I really wish Frankie the best. I’m a heroin and Xanax junkie from Alabama. I’ve been to rehab 8 times now and I’m so sick of this shit, I’m 25 and I’ve overdosed 7 times wondering when all of this shit is going to end. I’m currently on a Suboxone taper and have one strip to go and then I’m done with it. I actually moved to Pensacola Florida to live in a halfway house. I gathered 6 months of honest and real clean time but that lavish Florida lifestyle got the best of me man. I’m back in my hometown now and in reality I just had to be beaten to a pulp to finally realize that I’m going to die before I turn 26 if I don’t get my life together. Watching this show has truly helped me by giving me a boost to know I’m not the only one struggling with this, and that I don’t have to go through this alone either! I pray that every addict suffering(including myself lol) will eventually get this or figure it out before heroin figures them out..And as for this Neil guy, what he has stated above isn’t wrong and it isn’t right either, it’s just what has worked for him. Is he wrong? No. Is he right? No. Everyone gets clean their own way. He’s just repeatedly saying what keeps HIM clean, which was getting annoying to read. I understand he’s just passionate and wants the best for everyone struggling. I love you all :)

  68. THANK YOU to one and all for watching the first season of Dopesick Nation! Thank you also for your comments and concern. We are grateful for heroes like Allie. We are hopeful and concerned about Frankie. We are hoping for another season to be able to tell more stories, help more people, and continue to humanize the people affected by this awful disease. Let Viceland know you'd like to see more! Everyone should know that they're not at all alone in this. Thank you so much.

  69. And by the way. You say everyone gets clean their own way and telling me that I’m tight and wrong. When the fact of the matter is you have no idea what Recovery is and how to achieve it. You might help yourself by doing kess talking and more listening to others who have recovered. It’s not my fault that you still haven’t made a commitment to getting and staying clean. When i was new I didn’t tell people who had 30 or 30 years of recovery how to recover. I just adked them how they did it and if they would help me. It’s called being teachable. You might want to try it because it’s obvious you don’t know jack about staying clean

    Good luck to you
    I wish you the best

  70. PLEASE DELETE ALL POSTS MADE BY "NEIL GUTTENBERG." His comments are bringing down everything the show, Frankie, and Allie are doing. CJ Gronner, you have helped shed light on a complex and catastrophic problem in our nation. I'm not sure what it is you do behind the scenes, but your passion and dedication is reflected by the quality of every episode. I very much hope there is at least one more season of Dope Sick Nation, and that you three ANGELS are again involved. Before watching the show, I'd never taken the "addiction is a disease" thing that seriously. I always saw it as a junkie's way of ducking accountability for their actions. But now I look at these drug addicts as I would a cancer patient, with less judgement and more compassion. That's a big deal. God bless you!

  71. Are you okay, Neil? You've been blowing up this comment section for over a month now. You're acting like someone fully obsessed: sitting at their keyboard, smoking meth and just waiting for ANYONE to make a post here so you can ramble word salad and cliché platitudes at them. And trust me, the "at them" is the major thing here because you don't sound like you're willing to listen or understand, you only want to talk about yourself and be the center of attention. You're not willing to entertain the idea that different things are going to work for different people and only they know what makes them feel complete when they're not using. You say you're experienced in the life of both active addiction and rehabilitation but your posts remind me of someone who's newly 30 days sober and just can't wait to tell anyone with eyes and ears about how you've got it all figured out and if someone's struggling, you'll figure out their life for them as well. Your dedication COULD be admirable but it isn't. No one cares about how knowledgeable you are when you come off so grating and holier than thou with your messiah complex, telling people there's only ONE WAY to get sober and it's NEIL'S WAY. If you truly knew as much as you say you do, then you would know the quickest way to get someone to shut down and ignore anything you have to say from that point on is to forceful is this uniquely annoying way.

  73. Congratulations on a suspenseful, haunting, and eye-opening show. It's the only program I've ever watched on Viceland. I hope you continue to make more seasons of it. I doubt I would find it as compelling if either Frankie or Allie were replaced, even though the show isn't just about them. We viewers have become emotionally invested in them and want to know they're doing okay.

  75. Hi, great show. I'm not a user, never have been, but I watch the show and Commend the show and especially Frankie and Allie for spending their precious time trying to help a fellow human being. Not that I have ever thought about using or abusing any drug but for certain I won't after watching this educational show. Please keep this show going because it is so important for people to see what can actually happen when drugs are misused and abused. Thank you.

  82. Idk its hard to be personal without being personal. This show its nice to see people relate but its not the answer everyone is different we all need help one way or the other anyone who says different is Perfect. I have been a drug addict for 23 years and I will be for the rest of my life. I just choose not to get high today. Is what I have been telling myself for the past year and a half. Treatment centers are great but I dont believe in making someone go or giving them a ride is the answer.
