Aloha Friday!

Today is just about the most glorious day possible in Venice, California. Blossoms are bursting out all over, little straggler Painted Lady butterflies are still fluttering overhead after the massive migration this week, and the sun is shining, weather is sweet ...

I came across this quote today, that after all of the drama of this week in the world - from another mass shooting, to our awful Administration, to local cat fights over Venice politics - is especially perfectly great ...

"Staying positive in a negative world is the new gangster." - Lalah Delia

Yeah, man. I take that to heart, and do my very best to be gangster. Join me, won't you?
Have an awesome weekend ... looks like it's going to be beach days finally! Yes! (gangster)

O Christmas Palm Tree!

I was out walking around this morning and cut through the canals to check out the bridges in the daytime. The sun was high and warm and humming Christmas carols felt a little out of place, but it still had to be done ... 'tis the Season!

At the other side of one bridge, I saw a great and creative use of dried up palm fronds - someone had made Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer on a frond. Love it.

Carrying on down a different canal, there was another family making good use of the fronds. There was a Mrs. Claus type, with blonde braids I could appreciate ...

... And then there was Mr. Claus himself, in a grass rootsy display of natural Christmas decoration  ingenuity. I've never seen palm tree art done like this, and it touched me as a very Venice way of showing off your holiday cheer. Good job, folks!

Christmas decorations make me happy (my name is really Carol for a reason), and I'd love to see which ones all of you love most ... please feel free to share them with me and I'll post for all to see. It all goes by so fast, let's love it all while we can!

Ho Ho Ho!

Shed The Old Leaves

A whole bunch of Venice palm trees were getting a trim while I was on my morning walk, and it was kind of great to watch. The guys are on lifts all the way up, and it looked like fun work. It was mesmerizing to watch the big, dry fronds fall gracefully down to the street for a moment ... and then it got me thinking.

It's back to school time here in L.A.  (even though summer is still in full swing, these poor kids today ...), and kids get new clothes and new supplies, and move on up in grades and intelligence - leaving the old behind. I don't think you ever really grow out of that feeling at the end of the summer ... to me, it's almost more new year than New Year's Eve. Like, o.k. ... let's get down to business for real here. Let's go forward into something new. Let's learn. Let's shed the old leaves and emerge better for it, as we grow UP.

Deep thoughts. Happy Friday. Happy Weekend - let's get to shedding!

A New Palm Tree Mural On Abbot Kinney!

There's a gorgeous new photographic mural on Abbot Kinney, and last night there was a party at the Kit and Ace store to celebrate its artist, Noah Abrams. I don't frequent the posh ABK chain shops, but when my friend DJ Lady Sinclair let me know that she was spinning at this function, I sauntered on over to check it out.

The sun was setting just as I arrived, giving the brand new (put up this very day) mural a golden sheen. Selfie takers were already lining up for their turn in front of the palm trees, with the ubiquitous yoga handstanders front and center. The wall appears to already be a new destination in town.

Inside, Abrams had similar photographic prints available for purchase, and the drinks were flowing in celebration. There was a taco setup outside, courtesy of Tacos Hell Yeah! (great name, and an apt one, as they were delicious), so everyone was properly sated as they enjoyed the art.

I ran into a handful of longtime residents, all of whom thought the proceedings had a whiff of a fancy store pandering to the neighborhood about it (in a week where there's a lot of that going around in the political world), but we all agreed that it was better that they were at least trying to fit in, versus choking their own agenda down our throats (as is also happening this week, courtesy of the DNC).

It was a lovely time on the block, and I discovered that the people at Kit and Ace are all super cool. If you ever need a $100 t-shirt, it's a good place to start. Thank you to them for the tacos, the Modelos, and most of all, for more art in the neighborhood.

Congratulations to Noah Abrams on a new Venice landmark!
