Tom Everhart - Venice Goes Raw In Beverly Hills

There was a lot of buzz around Beverly Hills on Saturday night, but it wasn't because of the next day's Oscar ceremony ... it was because pretty much all of Venice traipsed on over to the Mouche Gallery on Beverly Drive to celebrate the art of our own Tom Everhart at the opening of his new Raw show.

I hadn't seen so much of Venice gathered all in one place since the closing of Hal's (and indeed, Don Novack was there too, assuring us there will soon be turkey burgers again on AKB), and everyone was thrilled to be together again, especially for the occasion of our friend and neighbor's art.

Black and white attire was suggested, as the show features Everhart's black and white works from 1998-2016. As this is roughly the duration of our friendship, seeing each piece was also like visiting with old friends, in their rawest form. A great many of the gentlemen present were outfitted in tuxedos, lending a formal flair to the fun of it all.

The big centerpiece was Surfing With Franz and Willem, 2015, and it provided the backdrop for many a photo throughout the evening.

Everhart himself accepted congratulations and embraces throughout the evening from longtime friends and celebrity collectors alike, with all parties having a complete blast, champagne in hand.

It was nice to get everyone out of Venice collectively, but also to absolutely take over this quiet stretch of Beverly Drive, showing them how fun openings always are when we come together - wherever we are (we've similarly taken over New York, Las Vegas, etc ..., and it's always the best time).

It was wall to wall friends as the night took off, and happy memories were both made, and reminisced. Jennifer Everhart was our gracious hostess of the evening, and was beaming as the crowd swirled around enjoying her husband's years of work, and each other. It was all a smashing success.

There were too many chats to be had, as soon enough the place had to close and revelers made their way out (past the paparazzi) and on into the night to keep the party going. A wonderful evening of art, and, as importantly, of friendship. The love and respect between all these people that love and call Venice home was tangible, and special, as I think we all again realized how important our history, and our community, has always been to each other. The love, like the art celebrated on this night, is raw.

John Salley and Tom Everhart - Game On!

John Salley, best known as a former Los Angeles Laker, now has a talk show on the Reelz network called Game On! He stopped by the studio of Venice artist (and main homie), Tom Everhart, last week to check out the new art works and have a good sit down chat. I stopped by to check it all out, and though I've known and listened to Tom speak about his work for years and years, I still heard new things, and was as fascinated as Mr. Salley hearing it for the first time.


The t.v. people set up all their equipment, and we basically all just laughed and learned all afternoon. To begin with, Salley said, "This is my favorite space in all of Venice {me too} ... All white, beautiful women ... some of them white ... I'm getting the love in Venice! Thank you for letting me in!" He's hilarious, and started the interview portion of the deal by saying, "So I call you Snoopy Dude ...", which Tom explained that he often hears, sometimes as derogatory, and sometimes as a compliment. His art does feature Peanuts characters, yes, but after hearing him explain the whole story about how he met Charles Schulz, how he came to see the world through those eyes, and how a good artist sees something no one else sees ... it all becomes clear just what Everhart is up to with his vast canvases of bright color and wonder.


I want to leave some of it for you to watch on Game On! but to sit and listen (and try not to laugh out loud so the mics could hear - hard) to these two talk was very insightful and inspiring, for sure. Everhart explained that he was never into comics(though did add that "South Park is some of the best contemporary art today", but loved coloring books, but always wanted to create new things within the lines. His prior work was very realist skeleton pieces, but when he met Mr. Schulz, he did as encourage, which was to "Always see things in a new way". (That's very Venice). Tom almost died of colon cancer 23 years ago, and that experience gave him a whole new awareness of life, and those skeletons gave way to the happiness and color now seen in his work about the same time.


When Everhart met Schulz, they spent an entire day just drawing lines, the love of which bonded them together for the remainder of Schulz's life. Schulz's lines became Everhart's new art language. Schulz passed down his knowledge like a Father to a Son, and allowed him the use of his characters for the term of Tom's own life. While Tom was explaining this to Salley, he was nodding and smiling, and then said, "Yeah, at first I was like, 'What's up with the dirty water and the dots?" At the time, Tom replied that it was him seeing the birds at the beach. Salley now lit up, got it and said, "Now I started seeing things YOUR way!" Just as now when I see an Everhart Snoopy doing a back flip off a Tahitian cliff, I know that that's really Tom's wife, Jennifer expressing her love for life through Tom's eyes. That's how he sees it.


Tom doesn't really talk about the who's who collectors of his art, but Salley said, "Well, I know one very sexy guy named John Salley who has one of your pieces ..." which he sure enough does.


We all had a (basket)ball talking and celebrating art, and when Salley said, "See, when I played basketball, I had to share my championships, but now I get to interview champions!" I couldn't agree more.

Ancient Chinese Secret - Tom EverhART opening!

One of the very best parties in Venice EVER went down last Saturday night, at the home/gallery of painter, Tom Everhart and his goddess wife, Jennifer. You're probably familiar with them both from seeing them ride their bikes all over town, all blonde and brightly colored.


Tom's art can be seen all over the world, as he is the only artist that incorporates Peanuts (Snoopy and the Gang) characters into the fine art form. To see his art in Venice, Tom's paintings have hung in Lilly's on Abbot Kinney since they opened, and Saturday night had Venetians (and friends from other places) celebrating (in rare form) to warm the new private gallery space in their home.


It was a truly epic shindig. Cases of Veuve Clicquot sated everyone's thirst, while partygoers were met by drumming and didjeridu-ing from a couple musicians up on the rooftop. The Full Moon was shining brightly, and lit up the gorgeous guests, who were all dressed up for once in Venice! I did not see one pair of flip-flops - true story!


The paintings we were there to see (and trip out on) were the latest in Tom's Taha'a series (2010), inspired by the place that has become the Everhart's home away from home in Tahiti. Their tropical Eden is well represented by the huge splashes of color and lush scenery, where if you look closely, Snoopy can be seen diving into the majestic lagoon.


The 3D paintings comprised of acrylic, varnish and cups leap out at you in a frenzy of shape and color, with my favorite being the black and white Schroeder and Franklin (2009).


Friends and celebrities (local and otherwise - Jessica Simpson even showed up ...) tossed back glass after glass of champagne as they checked out the art, and each other. The special treat of the evening was a tribe of Tahitian drummers, who really blew the party out of the (painted) water. Glasses broke and the Cops showed up, making it a true Venice bash.


{Note to the "Neighbor" who complained: You are old and lame. 10:00 pm on a Saturday night is ok to have some noise. You live in a city. A fun one. Relax!}


Impromptu topless dancing, more champagne, moon gazing, balcony people watching, some more champagne, and all of it surrounded by the very best friends and neighbors, all having a complete ball! All you could do was soak up the good vibrations, and consider yourself to be beyond blessed to be there ... HERE.
